The importance of a good formal design of the environment according to Max Bill

Abstract

Max Bill defended the importance of having a properly designed environment. As environment he understood from the smallest object to the city or región. He gave to objects an important rol in the development of daily life. He thought that they could improve our life, that they could make it more harmonious and even, that they were the frame where our culture is shown. He held that art had to have an influence in the design: objects didn’t had only to work but also be beautiful. For Max Bill beauty must be a function more, with equal importance to the rest of the functions that an object has to fulfill. To explain it, he created in 1948 the exhibition “die gute form” and, in 1952, he published the book FORM. “The good form” became a competition that awarded the best annual designs in industry.
