Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze the technical-tactical performance profile of reception in different age groups and competition categories in men's volleyball. The sample comprised 11,519 reception actions carried out by 986 players in 299 sets observed in different competition categories (under-14, under-16, under-19, senior national and international senior). A descriptive and correlational inter- and intra-group observational design was used. The variables were: competition category, serve execution prior to reception, and reception performance. The results showed a significant increase in the percentage of reception actions derived from jump serves, and a noticeable improvement in performance of reception regardless of how it was executed. In higher age categories, receptors are better capable of neutralizing opponent serves and planning their attack. This paper discusses various reasons for this evolution in reception, and the effects on the training process in different competition categories in volleyball.
