Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

REIA publishes original articles in English (preferred language) and Spanish, accompanied by an abstract and keywords in both languages. Submissions must range between 10,000 and 30,000 characters (excluding bibliography and footnotes), and follow the formatting guidelines: Word document, Calibri 12 pt font, 1.5 line spacing.

General bibliographic citations must follow the Chicago author-date style and be integrated into the main body of the text. In the case of works with multiple editions, the year of the original edition in the original language should be added in brackets before the year of the edition used (e.g., Baudelaire [1857] 1975). A complete and consistent bibliography must be included at the end of the manuscript, corresponding to all in-text citations.

Footnotes are permitted exclusively for clarifications, contextual remarks, or complementary references that enrich the reading without disrupting the main narrative flow. The journal’s editorial design supports their inclusion on the same page. If bibliographic references are included in footnotes, they must also conform to the Chicago author-date style.

Articles must be submitted via this same website in two separate files: one containing the author’s details (name, affiliation, contact information) and another with the full anonymous text. All details must also be included in the submission form.

Images must have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, must include a footnote with Fig. X number, description and credits, and be properly referenced in the text.

All submissions undergo double-blind peer review. The editorial process includes a single round of review, with the possibility for revisions. Final acceptance is subject to the article’s scientific quality and adherence to editorial guidelines.

Authors will receive a typeset proof for review before publication. Only one article per author will be accepted per issue.

Contributions may fall in the following categories:

General Documents

While this section is usually prepared by the editorial team—based on general documents, introductory texts, and thematic framing—authors may also contribute in two specific formats:

  1. Book Reviews
Authors are invited to submit short reviews (600–1000 words) of recently published books that engage critically with the topic of the current issue. The review should not only summarize the content, but also evaluate its relevance, originality, and potential contribution to the ongoing debate proposed by the call. Comparative reviews of two or more titles are also welcome if clearly justified and well structured.

  2. Proposals for Thematic Issues
Authors may submit proposals for future thematic issues (600–1000 words). These should include a brief description of the proposed theme, its relevance in the contemporary architectural discourse, and a list of suggested subtopics or angles of inquiry. Proposals should be original, well-argued, and align with REIA’s commitment to critical, interdisciplinary, and future-oriented research in architecture.

All submissions in this section are subject to editorial review and selection.

Articles

REIA publishes original, unpublished contributions that advance contemporary architectural research through diverse formats and lenses. Articles may be submitted in response to one of the following types of Calls for Papers, each with its own scope and orientation:

  • Thematic Call: Curated around emerging and pressing issues—such as AI for radical architecture, architecture without interior, or material ecologies, —these calls define the focus of each issue and are announced periodically. Submissions must engage directly and critically with the topic proposed in the current call, offering theoretical, methodological, or applied perspectives.
  • Open Call: This section remains permanently open to high-quality submissions on any topic relevant to the field of architectural research. Articles may propose new critical frameworks, analyze specific historical or contemporary cases, or explore intersections with disciplines such as philosophy, ecology, technology, or the arts. Interdisciplinary and antidisciplinary approaches are encouraged.
  • Pedagogical & Experimental Call: Focused on teaching-based research, this call invites reflections from academic studios, pedagogical experiments, or design-based inquiries—preferably connected to the current thematic issue. We welcome content that bridges conceptual frameworks and educational practices, especially when grounded in original student work, studio formats, or institutional initiatives.

All calls will be announced in the Announcements section of the REIA platform, where detailed instructions and deadlines are provided. Authors are encouraged to check the current call before submitting. Submissions must follow REIA’s editorial format and citation guidelines (Chicago author-date style) and be uploaded via the OJS platform.
