Abstract

In sports training, it is important to take into account the needs, motivations and expectations of the group of athletes that participate in the activity, in addition to the coach's self-perception of leadership style. The application of a questionnaire is one of the ways to know the coaches' perceptions of their teaching style, and to study how they evolve during the season. During one season, 4 basketball coaches of teams of adolescents at risk of social exclusion were trained in emotional intelligence and values, through an ad hoc training methodology to work with this collective. The instrument that was used to measure the leadership of the coaches was the LSS (Leadership Scale for Sports) questionnaire. The effect of the training provided a large increase in the instructional dimensions (effect size, ES = 0.95), medium in the opinion dimensions (ES = 0.46) and reinforcement (ES = 0.52), and small in initiative (ES = 0.36) and social support (ES = 0.18) and a small decrease in the organizational dimension (ES = -0.31). This methodological proposal could serve as a reference to develop and evaluate future training programs for ad hoc trainers for populations with special needs.
