Abstract

Accuracy in basketball free throw is a very important variable training this sport. This type of throw has been traditionally trained by the repetition of the gesture without changes in practice conditions. The aim of this study is to show the efficacy of variable practice compared to specificity practice in basketball free throw in. Ten young basketball players (13 ± 0.33 years) took part in this study. The participants were training during three weeks to complete 9 sessions (performing 360 throws). Specificity practice increased the efficacy in the throw. Variable practice did not initially improve accuracy. However, after rest period, in the retention test, the accuracy improved significantly compared to those obtained after specificity practice (F1,9 = 6,804; p< 0,05). The results showed an adaptation period to the variable practice, increasing accuracy after a two weeks resting period.
