Injury incidence in handball. The role of the physiotherapist and the training program in an intermediate level handball team

Abstract

Background: As in the high-level sports we need to know the more frequently injuries and the physiotherapy treatments given in the non professionals handball teams. Also it´s important to know the physical preparation to measure the success of the trainers/coaches and sports physiotherapist. Objectives: To determine the incidence of the sports injuries in a non-professional Spanish male handball team. To know more about their training system. To describe the actions and physiotherapy treatments in the more common injuries. To look over the work conditions of the physiotherapist in a team like this. Sample: A sample of 15 male players (28 years average), from C.B. Atlético Boadilla and 1 Physiotherapist from the team. Methods: The team players were invited to fill out a questionnaire about their medical sports injury history, their trainings system and the work relationship with the physiotherapist. The 8 years experienced physiotherapist was invited to fill out a questionnaire about the more frequently treatments and his work conditions in the handball team. Results: The players were asked about their training conditions, their clinical injury history and their relationship with the physiotherapist. The physiotherapist was asked about the common techniques used with the players and his work conditions in the team. Conclusions: The training strength could be really important to predict the level of injuries and to focus the part of the body more injured. It´s important to the sport physiotherapist to use and manage in manual therapies, tapings and criotherapy. Also it´s important to have a high knowledge about the more common injuries to prevent them and to improve the treatments.
